Sensitive and careful management of child and youth trauma – more research needed

Call For Duty is dedicated to helping young children in refugee families to overcome traumas faced back home. We are developing early childhood programmes to this end. But we need your help.

Young children in refugee families often endure significant direct or indirect trauma from their experiences and horrors of conflict, unsettling evacuation, and then resettlement in a foreign land. Extensive research on these factors have shown that the socio-emotional development of young children can be devastating, with direct links to interfering with their learning capacity and ability to form healthy and proactive relationships. The issue of trauma has therefore gained increasing visibility across the early childhood field, but of course such emotional damage can also affect the lives of teens and young adults from, say, war-torn environments. Little research has to date been done on specific traumatic experiences and needs of young refugee children and youth. There have certainly been no proper strategies developed to address them. Call For Duty aims to change that.
